Rushing through my mobile phone contacts I hurried past a few hundred names.
Names of people; some new and some loooong forgotten. I stopped at one particular "Suresh" and scratched my head.
Now who was this Suresh..when did I add him.. was he a code name for some guy I didn't want mom to read... was he from my home planet...was he someone I added in the future and forgot to erase before I went back in time? Simple questions like these are bound to arise in anybody's mind. I ran a search query in my head for a long time and then recalled that it was a canteen-wale-bhaiya from my office training center! Almost everyone had his number and we used to call him up for random tasks in the good ol' training days.
Ok...having solved that mystery I wondered if there were more such memory games in the contacts which I could play. A lo! A whole bundle of mysteries, mind benders and teasers lay packed waiting to be solved.
I started my journey alphabetically discovering surprising answers which were all locked up inside my head since the Pyramids. I looked at every name and thought about that person for at least a minute. In that time frame I tried to do a quick jog about how they made me feel, all the experiences I shared with him/her...etc etc...and found it to be quite an emotional roller coaster! It was like going back and reliving all those experiences. Some people who I had not in touch with..I gave them a call and had a good chat. Some birthdays were coming up which I was sure to forget had I not done this little exercises. An old teacher, a long lost friend, updates from people with whom I had not talked to in ages...sighhhh
I also went through my digital diary (remember those things?) which was luckily still alive (praise casio!). It was funny how cool it was to flaunt those things a decade ago. OOoo he has a digital diary...so awesome..it works on solar cells..totally rocking!!... LOL!!
And my real phonebook diary made with paper (remember paper?)...THaT was just somethings that blew my socks off! I have it since the last 15 yrs of so, and it was filled by other people, very much like a slam book. The funniest thing was that I had little red checks in front of a few names. After much thinking I recalled that they were put to remind myself that "they" were the ones who hadn't offended me in anyway and were in my "good" books! Hahha the kind of things kids do :P
Anyways...the point of writing all this is that I highly recommended you to do these at home. The stunts were performed by a thorough unprofessional and should be attempted.

Climate Change
Even as the leaders of 192 nations are busy debating in Copenhagen right now, billions of people around the world are still not convinced with the argument.
What is surprising is that many people (mostly journalists and non-scientists) have picked up bits of information from skeptics and have used that as their sole base for argument against the facts. The facts that they might not even know about.
I was watching 'dateline' on BBC today and was amused (and shocked) to hear the points put by Janet Daley of the Daily Telegraph. If journalists have such views then so will their readers!
Here are bits of information the skeptics pick up from the media and formulate a case against years of scientific research:
1. Warming is a natural phenomena which has been happening for centuries due to solar activity, and the natural climate cycle: People use this to say, "well hence rise in CO2 levels cannot be due to human actions". --: There is a CO2 cycle in nature and warming does take place due to it and due to solar activity but the exponential rise in temperature over the last 100 yrs is NOT naturally happening. The rise in the CO2 levels and hence warming has been proved by extensive research spanning over 30 years involving many countries. Also, there is not a single scientific paper which refutes global warming due to human activities.

2. There has been noticed a slight drop in temperature in this decade: A decade of level or slightly lower temperatures is only a temporary dip to be expected as a result of natural, short-term variations in the enormously complex climate system. Ten years is peanuts compared to hundred million years old climate cycle.
3. Forcing countries to make cuts in emissions will stop development and progress: At what cost? These people forget the enormous environmental cost 100 times or more than the entire world economy! We might be able to continue with the emissions for a few years and then when the climate will play havoc it will all collapse.
And how will it stop progress? All we trying to do is replace an existing bunch of inefficient fossil-fuel based technology with a more green, non-pollution, healthy and renewable one. It can only take the world forward.
4. The spokesperson of USA said at Copenhagen that rich countries cannot pay for this because they didn't know that CO2 emission would cause global warming until recently.: This is not true as the data and proof was available in the early 1970s, or even earlier. It has been suppressed by lobbyists and greedy companies and have pressured scientist for years to modify their data. Even during the 1st IPCC report we heard voices of scientists expressing concern how politicians and oil companies were hounding them to tone down their findings.
4. The scale is too great, it cannot be done, it cannot be enforced: Wrong, the technology exists to save our lives, it can be done and enforced it people realise that the very survival of the future generation (in fact the current generation) depends on it. People should listen to the "meek" but hardworking scientists all over the world rather that their showy television know-it-alls who are funded by the polluting firms.
I encourage you to go look at data provided by NASA, IPCC etc and other websites and read scientific papers (or at least articles written by credible scientists) and look at the pictures of receding ice-covers and glaciers over the last few decades then form your opinions.
Here are some more graphs for your reference:

yawn
My head hurts because my work involves 10 hrs of computer staring and my eyes are burning. Oww, I am not really sure if this physical distress is brought on by work or the unimaginably noxious air outside. There is a vile haze seen from the satellite images hanging over India and China. I already have enough ailments to write a novel (Horror obviously) about. God, I think I have aged 5 years after a year of working. Everyone in the IT sector is so damn unhealthy....
I am exhausted after climbing up two to three storeys. :(

Dynamic Pendulum >>
Time. No, not the coaching institute...though i did join it last year for CAT. Gave most of its exams and finally decided not to sit for it. I thought it would be better if I gave it after gaining more work-ex. And as you know I will start my preparations for it tomorrow. "Which tomorrow?" is a good question which I will answer, you guessed it--tomorrow.
So coming back to Time, I just have this super-weird feeling is running faster every 10 years. I clearly remember till 1997 life moved like a lot like me when I get up at 11 am and hunt for my glasses. Slow, unsteady, drowsy and drooly . Then from '97, it hurried like it wanted to race me till my school bus. From 2007-- a whoooooooshhh, accelerating rapidly, just couldn’t focus >>
I remember a few earmarked pages in my history.
"telling myself only one year left before I sit for my 12th board exams"
To a friend: "2 years left for college to end, and we have so much to do!"
"I won't survive the first year of work", then surviving and celebrating it!
.
.
.
Seems strange and unreal, especially when you read all those silly sentimental forwards your friends send you about and suddenly realise they are true!
Is God tweaking some “constants” in his lab?
Help me out here if you feel the same. And oh, the speed of time please?

Ever felt like me?
Ten thousand heavy metal machines rotating at a million revolutions per second. Crashing into each in a billionth of a second and breaking into smithereens. Huge chunks flying off at odd angles, twisting and spinning as they go against the heavy polluted air, dragging their rough edges against it.
The noise is so loud that I can’t see! It has shut off everything. It’s happening so fast; it’s happening right now--now which you can’t really think about because it’s already over. Time has its hair pulled till its strings start disintegrating. The structure, the sense, the meaning of everything has begun collapsing. It is not an end, it is not a beginning. It is never. The second has taken its claim over the minute, hour and year. The present has come to dominate. The time’s up.
I can't sleep when I feel this way. There is a mental image of all this which is same and extemeley heavy. I can feel its weight on my nerves.

How to have your soup and drink it too
Greetings fellow sibling-irritators!
Here is an example of why it's ok to let your bro/sis hate you:
This incident dates back a good 10 years--
Time: around 4 pm when kids get post-lunch hunger attacks
Location: At a friend's place
People: 4 (Me n my bro(V), my friend and her bro(A))
We were completely famished and my friend and I decided to make ready-made soup as there was nothing else in the house.
T: "Oh sh**, we have overcooked this thing"
F: "Well done, now it's reduced to half!"
T: "Damn, now we would have share more with V & A, :( boo hoo "
F: "I think not, if they truely are our dear brothers ;) "
T to V & A: "Hey, will you guys like to have chicken soup?"
V & A unanimously: "Yes, yes!"
F with A laughing in the background: "Great, but you know what, WE have made it"
V & A with dissapointed/suspicious faces: "no ways..."
F & T: "OK!!!!"

There is a time for everything
Saw 'The Butterfly Effect' yesterday. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
But be warned, it's not for the faint-hearted. See the uncensored director's cut, that's the one to watch if you want to fully appreciate it. I have never seen a better disturbing-yet-so-freakin'-awesome movie before! It's even better than Donnie Darko!

No Sir, you may not go to the toilet
I had done countless silly things in college, well who hasn’t? But I doubt if anyone’s antics were even mildly amusing/insane or what-the-hell-was-that as mine.
To start off, a series of unfortunate in incidents that occurred to a sweet old professor of mine due to my, err, randomness..
I was a major figure in my college, chiefly due to my anti-bunking tendencies which made many fellow classmates suffer. I delighted in capturing the front seat, but unlike other first-benchers I behaved like a backbencher. I gossiped right under the professor’s nose and got countless warnings. It was only during his class that I used to unintentionally forget to switch off my cell phone. And again purely unintentionally, I just found his classes to coincide with my nap-hours.
My "awake" hours were occupied by running around to organize a movie club for college at that time. So one day I urgently needed his signature for the club to get permission for some activity. I was searching for him for an hour and found him walking really fast towards the hall (at the end of which was El Dorado).
I: "Sir please sign this for blah blah..."
He, in his sweet voice: "Baccha, I have to urgently use the toilet"
Beyond that is a ten-thousand words tome of self-disbelief to be written in 45 languages and hard bound in leather.

GO RAFA!!!

I LOVE RAFA!!!
Ever since I saw him play the semi-final at Roland Garros in '05 and beat Fedrer.
It was astonishing to see someone with pure adrenaline, beat Fedrer. He has this amazing determination, this do-or-die spirit that simply takes my breath away! It is this attitude which enables him to hit returns which most (make that 99.99999%) of the players think impossible.
I never doubted him. After winning the Wimbledon last year, he has quieted his harshest critics. He is the most spirited sportsman and person EVER!
Love you Rafa, may you win the first Australian Open title for Spain.

Free Radical: The Journey
For you, my new love: Free Radical Issue #6.

Nandu, Deepak, Shaswat, Rohit, Shashank, Yash, Nitish, Shaurya, Gargi, and Etika, Great work guys!! Not only did you manage to pull it off but also made everyone very proud!
My thoughts go back to the time when we (Sridhar, Saurabh, Sid and I) were trying to figure out how to start a magazine. This is how I recall it:
The Mission
We wanted to give JSSites a platform where they could freely express themselves, read quality articles and improve upon their English. It had to be a free magazine-- completely 'of, by and for' the students plus free of charge.
Initially it was slated to be a Lingua Franca thing. Also, we didn't know how frequently we could manage to publish it. Sridhar wanted a weekly or at least a monthly thing while I thought just an annual almanac would be possible. Finally we decided that a semester-wise issue would be most practical.
The Name
Some of the few names that were finalized were: '"Le Parlons" or Let's Speak in French (by Sridhar), "Chaitanya" meaning knowledge in Sanskrit (given by me, also a friend's name) and "Free Radical" given by Sid.
We had mulled on a couple of names, I remember I had a list of 15 odd names sans "Free Radical" and still none of them quite captured the spirit, the zeal that we wanted to present. Then one day Sid uttered 'Free Radical' and immediately we took a liking to it. We knew at that very moment that it was The name. Now, all we had to do was to go and convince the Humanities department that this name wasn't a scary rebellion-stirring name it seemed to be. Sridhar and I walked into the staff room and began the war. We knew we had to stick to our guns for the teachers would pressurize us to leave a name so unconventional. We had more than an hour long argument and came out victorious! Sid and Saurabh waited outside and we recounted the encounter with burst of giggles.
Another funny moment was when a guy from college associated “Free Radical” with something that’s "free of cost".
Red Tape, Volgan Style
Then we had to deal with the faculty, the staff, the printer and everyone else in between. Leave red-tape, it was a red-wall that stood between us and the shiny pages. There was an extraordinary need to get everything authorized, signed, labelled, doubly checked, confirmed, re-checked and applications to sign and get signed. We waited patiently for heads to nod.
The Clueless Struggle
There we were, a bunch of second year kids, trying to figure out how one finds sponsorship, collects articles and gets them printed. After getting the approvalssss, a major task was to get the money. Fortunately Sridhar got one from Pepsi. A decent ad with Sharukh reaching out for a bottle with the caption "Yeh Dil Mannge More". The beuracrate wanted Sharukh smaller. (it had to be decent!). Next, we needed students' contributions to be printed. There was another society that had thought of printing a college magazine right when we were going to. Unfortunately they steered a few articles to themselves which never got printed.
The Birth
The first issue took nine months. So it was in every sense of the word "our baby". When we held it in our hands it felt like God's gift from heaven for we knew how many sleepless nights were spent on it. The cover page had the College's photo and the tagline "speak your mind" in an oval. It was the most beautiful magazine in the world.
There was a grand event for the launch. We invited the Principal, Advisor, CAO and the entire faculty, staff and students. The advisor said, "This should not be the only issue. I hope many will follow". We sure lived up to that, and so did you guys. We were sceptical at first as to how we would get more sponsors, whether the administration would remain benevolent.
The Journey
All the issues remain close to our hearts. They have been read a million times by each one of us. Each page reminds me of the work that was put in it even though I didn't go to the printer's office very often (Sorry guys), cause the location freaked me (Isn't fit for my royal ass, as one had put it). The criticism and appreciation that came, the joy of seeing seeds of imagination inked...everything...everything that came with it is etched in heart and mind.

'Make Politicians Work' Campaign
The public servant is ruling us like a king. It is high time that we make our politicians work for the cause we voted them for.
After the Mumbai terror attacks, the common man has lost his patience. We need to do something and not feel so helpless.
We shall make them accountable. Let’s put them to public service.
Employees are made to work, irrespective of their character. So why can’t we make our politicians work?
We have the power. File RTI against corrupt MLAs and MPs. Have a review and follow up the work done by them. Make it visible. Collaborate news papers and channels to organize such events.
Let us spread this message by the medium of internet. Forward this message to all your friends, government offices and news agencies.
Let them know. Let them hear the voice of a Billion people!

Yeh hai Mumbai, yeh hai Mumbai, yeh hai Mumbai meri jaan
I have this song on my lips since morning. And we know what kind of morning the people of the city woke up to. As I write this article, the horrors are still unfolding. No amount of praying has been able to stop it.
Praying? Like that helps, but isn’t that all we can do? After all we are so.. so helpless. All we can do is feel the enormous scare, make frantic calls to loved ones and try not to talk about it later. Try to forget, because life must go on, because.. because we are so helpless.
Life must go on? Yeah right, only for those who didn’t lose anyone, for others life is over. While they grieve we must collectively mourn. Because they are so helpless. And as they drown in misery we must find people to blame and combust our anger. Hate breeds hate. We wait till someone comes and takes us out of our misery. It burns, the city and with it burns the basic human need of security.
Why do we accept this?
Saare jaahan se accha, hindusitan humara, hum bulbule hain isski, yeh gulsita humara humara.

Who me, Katrina?
It's my cousin's wedding on 7th December and all that I can think is "i hafta get meself a pretty picture".
All my life I have had a Banshee's voice and Medusa's hairstyle but this time I hope to bring the lady out of the circus. I never took grooming seriously and was once proud of it. In the past you would find me hanging from a tree branch declaring that all I ever put was vaseline and that too for flattening the snakes on my mane. Boy, I was mighty proud to be a no-sissy, no girly-girl and picked fights with guys. I was at my craziest best when in middle-school and got sent to the principal office. One could find a bit of Georgina (@The Famous Five), Idgie Threadgood (Fried Green Tomatoes) and Pink (The Singer) in me, or so I like to believe.
Living in the outskirts of Banglore was massive fun. I lived in a beautiful colony with wide open green spaces, tall trees, railway tracks and beyond that a mini-forest with ancient trees. I can describe it forever but shall spare thou.
So yeah, you can imagine that I got the culture-shock of my life when I came to Delhi. I was a wild monkey midst of all these supposedly hip girls who thought I came from another planet. Well somethings never change, haha. So over the years I have tried to change, just for the sake of change, I still don't dress up often though I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I like to once in a while wear a pretty dress and shock/surprise people. I had once worn salwar-suit to college and I swear many people didn't recognize me! That was fun.
Finally coming back to my-cousin's-wedding part, I have big plans, I want to get rid of my glasses, straighten the rug on me head, and a few other things. Hopefully the enthusiasm won't flag. Sometimes I feel it to be a waste of time and money and have to fight with my 'inner nonsense'.
If it doesn't turn out to be horrible, I will upload my pic.
